Genesis 47

Then Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers, with their flocks, their herds, and all that they own, have come out of the land of Canaan; and look, they are in the land of Goshen.” 2 And from among his brothers he took five men, and presented them to Pharaoh. 3 Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?”

And they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds, both we and our fathers.” 4 And they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to live as foreigners in the land because there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants live in the land of Goshen.”

Then Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. 6 The land of Egypt is in front of you. Settle your father and your brothers live in the best of the land. They should settle in the land of Goshen. And if you know any able men among them, then put them in charge of my livestock.”

Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob and presented him to Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. 8 And Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How old are you?”

And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my travels are 130 years. The days of the years of my life have been few and difficult, and they have not reached the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their travels.” 10 So Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and left Pharaoh’s presence.

Now Joseph settled his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded. 12 And Joseph provided his father, his brothers, and all of his father’s household with food according to the number of dependents.

Now there was no food in all the land; for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan were exhausted because of the famine. 14 And Joseph gathered up all the silver that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, in exchange for the grain which they bought; and Joseph brought the silver into Pharaoh’s house. 15 When the silver had been used up in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us food! Why should we die in in front of you because our silver is gone?”

And Joseph said, “Give me your livestock, and I will give you food in exchange for your livestock since your silver is gone.”

They brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for the horses, and for the flocks, and for the herds, and for the donkeys, and he fed them with food in exchange for all their livestock for that year. 18 When that year was over, they came to him in the second year and said to him, “We will not hide from my master how our silver is all used up, and the herds of livestock are my master’s. There is nothing left in the sight of my master except for our bodies and our lands. 19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for food, and we and our land will be servants for Pharaoh. Give us seed, that we may live, and not die, and that the land won’t be desolate.”

So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, because every man of the Egyptians sold his field, because the famine was severe on them, and the land became Pharaoh’s. 21 And as for the people, he moved them to the cities from one end of Egypt’s border even to its other end. 22 Only the land of the priests he didn’t buy, for the priests had an allowance from Pharaoh, and ate their allowance which Pharaoh gave them. That is why they didn’t sell their land. 23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Look, I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh. Here is seed for you, and you may plant in the land. 24 And it will be at the harvests that you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and the other four parts will be for you, for seed of the field and for your food and for those in your households and for your dependents to eat.”

So they said, “You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in the sight of my master, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.”

And Joseph established as an edict, concerning the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part. Only the land of the priests alone didn’t become Pharaoh’s.

Now Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they got possessions in it, and reproduced and became very many. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were 147 years. 29 And the days of Israel’s death approached, and he called his son Joseph, and said to him, “Please, if I have found favor in your eyes, please put your hand under my thigh, and do a kind and true favor for me. Please don’t bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I lie down with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burying place.”

And Joseph said, “I will do as you have said.”

And Israel said, “Swear to me.” And he swore to him. Then Israel bowed down on the head of the bed.
