Genesis 4

1 And the man knew Eve his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain (which sounds similar to Obtain) and said, “I have obtained a man with the help of Yehovah.” 2 And again she gave birth to his brother Abel (which means Short-Lived). And Abel was a shepherd of flocks, and Cain was a worker of the ground. 3 And at the end of some days, Cain brought a gift to Yehovah from the fruit of the ground. 4 And Abel, he also brought some of the firstborn of his flocks, from their best. And Yehovah regarded Abel and his gift, 5 but He didn’t regard Cain and his gift. And Cain burned with intense anger, and the expression on his face fell.

6 And Yehovah said to Cain, “Why are you burning with anger? And why has the expression of your face fallen? 7 If you do good, won’t there be elevation? If you don’t do good, sin crouches at the door. And its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.”

8 And Cain said to Abel his brother, “Let’s go into the field.” And it happened, that when they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

9 And Yehovah said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”

And he said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s guardian?”

10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground! 11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it won’t give its strength to you. You will be a nomad and a wanderer in the earth.”

13 And Cain said to Yehovah, “My punishment is greater than I can handle! 14 Look—You have driven me out today from the face of the earth. And I will be hidden from Your face, and I will be a nomad and a wanderer on the earth. And it will happen that whoever finds me will kill me.”

15 And Yehovah said to him, “Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him seven times.” And Yehovah put a mark on Cain, so that anyone finding him would not strike him down.

16 And Cain left Yehovah’s presence, and lived in the land of Wandering, east of Eden. 17 And Cain knew his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Ḥanokh. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son, Ḥanokh. 18 And for Ḥanokh, Irad was born, and Irad had Meḥuyael, and Meḥuyael had Metushael, and Metushael had Lamech.

19 And Lamech took two wives for himself: the name of the first one was Adah, and the name of the second one was Tzillah. 20 And Adah gave birth to Yaval. He was the father of those who live in tents and have livestock. 21 And his brother’s name was Yuval. He was the father of all who handle the harp and flute. 22 And Tzillah, she also gave birth to Tuval-Kayin, a forger of every cutting instrument of bronze and iron. And Tuval-Kayin’s sister was Na’amah. 23 And Lamech said to his wives,

“Adah and Tzillah, hear my voice. You wives of Lamech, listen to my speech, because I have killed a man for wounding me,and a young man for bruising me. 24 If Cain will be avenged seven times, then Lamech, 77 times!”

25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she gave birth to a son, and named him Shet (which means Granted), “because God has granted me another child in place of Abel, because Cain killed him.” 26 And Shet had a son also, and he named him Enosh (which means Mortal). At that time they began to call on Yehovah’s name.
