Genesis 14

1 In the days of Amraphel, king of Shinar; Arioch, king of Ellasar; Kedorla’omer, king of Elam; and Tidal, king of Goyim*, 2 they made war with Bera, king of Sodom; Birsha, king of Gomorrah; Shinav, king of Admah; Shemever, king of Tzevoyim; and the king of Bela (also called Tzo’ar). 3 All these joined together in the valley of Siddim (meaning Limestone), which is the Salt Sea. 4 They had served Kedorla’omer for twelve years, and in the thirteenth year they revolted.

5 In the fourteenth year Kedorla’omer came, and the kings who were with him, and struck the Rephaim in Ashterot Karnayim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh Kiryatayim, 6 and the Horites in their Se’ir Mountains near Oak-of-Paran, which is by the backcountry. 7 And they returned and came to Judgment Spring (which is Kadesh), and struck all the land of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that lived in Hatzatzon Tamar.

8 The king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Tzevoyim, and the king of Bela (which is Tzo’ar) went out; and they engaged together in battle in the valley of Siddim 9 against Kedorla’omer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings against the five. 10 Now the valley of Siddim was full of tar pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah ran away, and fell there. And the rest ran away to the hills. 11 Now they took all the stuff of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their food, and went away. 12 And they took Lot and his stuff, Abram’s brother’s son, and departed (he was living in Sodom).

13 And one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew. He was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner. And they were allies with Abram. 14 And Abram heard that his relative was taken captive, and he led out his 318 trained men, born in his house, and pursued as far as Dan. 15 And he split up against them by night, he and his servants, and struck them, and pursued them to Hovah, which is to the north of Damascus. 16 And he brought back all the stuff, and also brought back his relative Lot and his stuff, and also the women and the people.

17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the strike on Kedorla’omer and the kings who were with him, to the valley of Shaveh (which is the King’s Valley).

18 Now Melchizedek (which means King of Righteousness), King of Salem, brought out bread and wine. And He was priest of God Most High. 19 And He blessed him, and said,

“Abram is blessed by God Most High, maker of heaven and earth. 20 And God Most High is blessed, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”

And Abram gave Him a tenth of all.

21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the individuals, and take the things for yourself.”

22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted up my hand to Yehovah, God Most High, maker of heaven and earth, 23 that I will not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, so you won’t say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24 Nothing for me. Only what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. Let them take their share.”
