1 Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt. And Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, had bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there. 2 And Yehovah was with Joseph, and he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3 And his master saw that Yehovah was with him, and that Yehovah made all that he did succeed in his hand. 4 So Joseph found favor in his eyes, and Joseph assisted him. So Potiphar made him overseer over his house and he put everything that he had into his hand. 5 And it was, from the time that he made him overseer in his house and over everything that he had, that Yehovah blessed the Egyptian’s house because of Joseph. And Yehovah’s blessing was on everything that he had in the house and in the field. 6 And he left everything that he had in Joseph’s hand. And he didn’t look into anything that was with him, except for the food which he ate.
Now Joseph was well-built and handsome. 7 And it was, after these things, that his master’s wife set her eyes on Joseph; and she said, “Lie with me.”
8 But he refused, and said to his master’s wife, “Look—my master doesn’t look into what is with me in the house, and he has put everything that he has into my hand. 9 No one is greater in this house than I am, and he has not kept back anything from me except for you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great evil and sin against God?”
10 And it was, as she spoke to Joseph day after day, that he didn’t listen to her, to lie beside her or to be with her. 11 And it was, on a day like this, that he went into the house to do his business, and none of the men of the house were there in the house. 12 And she grabbed him by his clothing, saying, “Lie with me!”
But he left his piece of clothing in her hand, and ran away and got outside. 13 And it was, since she saw that he had left his clothing in her hand, and had run away outside, 14 that she screamed out to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, “Look, he has brought a Hebrew in to us to play around with us. He came in to me to lie down with me, and I screamed out with a loud voice. 15 And it was, when he heard that I raised my voice and screamed, that he left his clothing by me, and got outside.” 16 And she kept his clothing beside her until his master came home. 17 And she spoke to him according to these words, saying, “The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought to us, came in to me to play around with me, 18 and it was, as I raised my voice and screamed, that he left his clothing beside me and ran away outside.”
19 Now it was, when his master heard his wife’s words which she spoke to him, saying, “This is what your servant did to me,” his anger flared up. 20 And Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were imprisoned, and he was there in the prison. 21 But Yehovah was with Joseph, and extended kind favor to him, and gave him favor in the eyes of the prison keeper. 22 And the prison keeper gave all the prisoners who were in the prison into Joseph’s hand. He was the one who did everything that was done there. 23 And the prison keeper didn’t look into anything that was under his hand, since Yehovah was with him; and whatever he did, Yehovah made it succeed.
