1 So Israel traveled with all that he had and came to Be’er-Sheva, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. 2 And God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night and said, “Jacob, Jacob!”
And he said, “Here I am.”
3 So He said, “I am God, the God of your father. Don’t be afraid to go down down to Egypt, because I will make of you a great nation there. 4 I will go down with you into Egypt, and I will also surely bring you back up. And Joseph will put his hand on your eyes when you die.”
5 So Jacob rose up from Be’er-Sheva, and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. 6 And they took their livestock and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and went to Egypt—Jacob, and all his offspring with him, 7 his sons, and his sons’ sons with him, his daughters, and his sons’ daughters, and all his offspring he brought with him to Egypt.
8 Now these are the names of the children of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn. 9 The sons of Reuben: Hanoch and Pallu and Ḥetzron and Carmi. 10 The sons of Shimon: Yemuel and Yamin and Ohad and Yakhin and Tzoḥar and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman. 11 The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kehat, and Merari. 12 The sons of Judah: Er and Onan and Shelah and Peretz and Zeraḥ; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. The sons of Peretz were Ḥetzron and Ḥamul. 13 The sons of Issachar: Tola and Puvah and Yov and Shimron. 14 The sons of Zebulun: Sered and Elon and Yaḥle’el. 15 These are the sons of Leah, whom she gave birth to for Jacob in Paddan Aram, with his daughter Dinah. All the individuals, his sons and his daughters were 33. 16 The sons of Gad: Tzifyon and Haggi, Shuni and Etzbon, Eri and Arodi and Ar’eli. 17 The sons of Asher: Imnah and Ishvah and Ishvi and Beriah and Serah their sister. The sons of Beriah: Heber and Malkiel. 18 These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah, his daughter, and these she gave birth to for Jacob: sixteen individuals. 19 The sons of Rachel, Jacob’s wife: Joseph and Benjamin. 20 And Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph in the land of Egypt, whom Asenat, the daughter of Poti Fera, priest of On, gave birth to for him. 21 The sons of Benjamin: Bela and Bekher and Ashbel, Gera and Na’aman, Eḥi and Rosh, Mupim and Hupim and Ard. 22 These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob: all the individuals were fourteen. 23 The son of Dan: Hushim. 24 The sons of Naphtali: Yaḥtze’el and Guni and Yetzer and Shillem. 25 These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and these she gave birth to for Jacob: all the individuals were seven. 26 All the individuals who came with Jacob to Egypt, who were his direct offspring, in addition to Jacob’s sons’ wives, all the individuals were 66. 27 And the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were two individuals. All the individuals of the house of Jacob who came to Egypt were 70.
28 Now Jacob sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph, to show the way ahead of him to Goshen. And they came to the land of Goshen. 29 And Joseph prepared his chariot and went up to meet his father Israel in Goshen. And he appeared to him and threw his arms around his neck, and cried on his shoulder for a long time. 30 And Israel said to Joseph, “Now let me die, since I have seen your face, that you are still alive.”
31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s house, “I will go up and speak with Pharaoh and will tell him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me. 32 And the men are shepherds, because they have been keepers of livestock, and they have brought their flocks and their herds and all that they have.’ 33 So it will be, when Pharaoh summons you and says, ‘What is your occupation?’ 34 that you should say, ‘Your servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth even until now, both we and our fathers,’ so that you may live in the land of Goshen; because every shepherd is disgusting to the Egyptians.”
