Genesis 2

And the skies and the earth, and all their many parts were finished. 2 And on the seventh day God finished His work which He had done; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because He rested on it from all His work which He created to accomplish.

This is the history of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, on the day that Yehovah, God, made the earth and the heavens, 5 before any cultivated bush was on the earth, and before any cultivated plant had sprung up; for Yehovah, God, had not made it rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, 6 and a mist went up from the earth, and watered the whole surface of the ground.

And Yehovah, God, formed the man out of the dirt from the ground, and blew into his nose the breath of life; and the man became a living creature.

And Yehovah, God, planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. 9 And out of the ground Yehovah, God, made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. And the tree of life was in the middle of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided and became the source for four rivers. 11 The name of the first is Pishon (which means Spreader): it encompasses the whole land of Ḥavilah, where there is gold; 12 and the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13 And the name of the second river is Gihon (which means Gusher). It encompasses the whole land of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is the Tigris. It goes to the east of Assyria. And the fourth river, it is the Euphrates.

And Yehovah, God, took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to cultivate and preserve it. 16 And Yehovah, God, commanded the man, saying, “Eat, eat from every tree of the garden. 17 But don’t eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for on the day that you eat from it, you must die, die.”

And Yehovah, God, said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper matching him.” 19 And out of the ground Yehovah, God, formed every wild animal and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called every living creature, that became its name. 20 And the man gave names to all large animals, and to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal; but for Adam, no helper matching him was found.

And Yehovah, God, caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and he slept. And He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 And Yehovah, God, made the rib which He had taken from the man into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

And the man said,

“This time, bone from my bones, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called woman, because she was taken out of man.”

That’s why a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.
