1 Now it happened after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!”
And he said, “Here I am.”
2 And He said, “Please take your son, your one and only whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah (which means Seeing). And offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will tell you of.”
3 Now Abraham got up early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son. And he split the wood for the burnt offering, and got up and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 Now on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place from a distance. 5 And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there, and we will worship and come back to you.” 6 And Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and put it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and a knife. And the two of them went together. 7 And Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!”
And he said, “Here I am, my son.”
And he said, “Look, here are the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
8 And Abraham said, “God will see to the lamb for Himself for a burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went together, 9 and they came to the place which God had told him of. And Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood in order, and he tied up Isaac his son and put him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 And Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.
11 Now Yehovah’s Angel called to him from the sky and said, “Abraham, Abraham!”
And he said, “Here I am.”
12 And He said, “Don’t reach out your hand against the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you have awe for God, since you have not withheld your son, your one and only, from Me.”
13 Now Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and there—behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place “Yehovah Sees.” As it is said to this day, “On Yehovah’s mountain, it is seen.”
15 Now Yehovah’s Angel called to Abraham a second time from the sky, 16 and said, “I have sworn by Myself, says Yehovah, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your one and only, 17 indeed I will certainly bless you, and I will certainly increase the number of your offspring like the stars of the sky, and like the sand which is on the seashore, and your offspring will possess the gate of his enemies. 18 All the nations of the earth will be blessed by your offspring, because you have obeyed My voice.”
19 Now Abraham returned to his young men, and they got up and went together to Be’er-Sheva. And Abraham stayed in Be’er-Sheva.
20 Now it happened after these things that it was told to Abraham, saying, “Look, Milcah, she also has given birth to children for your brother Naḥor: 21 Utz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram, 22 Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Yidlaf, and Betuel.” 23 And Betuel had Rebekah. These eight Milcah gave birth to for Naḥor, Abraham’s brother. 24 His concubine, whose name was Re’umah, also gave birth to Tevaḥ, Gaḥam, Tahash, and Ma’akhah.
