Genesis 34

1 Now Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she gave birth to for Jacob, went out to see the women of the land. 2 And Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her. And he took her, lay with her, and forced her. 3 Then his feelings were attached to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young lady, and spoke to the heart of the young lady. 4 And Shechem spoke to Hamor his father saying, “Get me this young lady as a wife!”

5 Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah, his daughter; and his sons were with his livestock in the countryside. And Jacob didn’t say anything until they came. 6 Now Hamor, Shechem’s father, went out to Jacob to talk with him. 7 And the sons of Jacob came in from the countryside when they heard it. And the men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had done a vile thing in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, a thing like this should not be done. 8 And Hamor talked with them, saying, “My son Shechem, his feelings are attached to your daughter! Please give her to him as a wife. 9 And make marriages with us. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves, 10 and settle among us, and the land will be open in front of you. Settle down and trade and acquire property in it.”

11 And Shechem said to Dinah’s father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you will tell me I will give. 12 Ask me an exceedingly great amount for a bride price and gift, and I will give whatever you ask of me, just give me the young lady as a wife.”

13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father and spoke with deceit, because he had defiled Dinah their sister, 14 and they said to them, “We can’t do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised; for that is a disgrace to us. 15 Only on this condition will we agree with you. If you become just like us, by having every male among you circumcised, 16 then will we give our daughters to you; and we will take your daughters for ourselves, and we will settle among you, and we will become one people. 17 But if you will not listen to us to be circumcised, then we will take our sister, and go.”

18 Now their words were good in the eyes of Hamor and in the eyes of Shechem, Hamor’s son. 19 And the young man didn’t hesitate to do this thing, because he desired Jacob’s daughter. And he was the most influential of everyone in his father’s house. 20 And Hamor and Shechem his son entered the gate of their city, and they talked with the men of their city, saying, 21 “These men are at peace with us, so let them settle in the land and trade in it. Look, the land is wide-reaching enough for them. Let’s take their daughters as wives for ourselves, and let’s give them our daughters. 22 But only on this condition will the men agree with us to settle among us, to become one people; every male among us must be circumcised, as they are circumcised. 23 Their livestock and their possessions and all their animals—won’t they become ours? Let’s just agree with them, and they will settle among us.”

24 And all who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and to Shechem his son. And every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city. 25 And it was on the third day, when they were sore, that two of Jacob’s sons, Shimon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword, came upon the unsuspecting city, and killed all the males. 26 They killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and they took Dinah out of Shechem’s house and went away. 27 Jacob’s sons came on the dead, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister. 28 They took their flocks, and their herds, and their donkeys, and what was in the city, and what was in the countryside, 29 and all their wealth. And they took captive all their little ones and their wives, and took as plunder everything that was in the houses. 30 And Jacob said to Shimon and Levi, “You have stirred up trouble for me, to make me stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number, and they will gather themselves together against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house!”

31 But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?”
