1 “Be careful not to do your charity† in front of people in order to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 Therefore when you do charity, don’t toot a horn ahead of yourself, like the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they are recognized by people. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward! 3 But when you do charity, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your charity will be in secret. Then your Father Himself†, who sees in secret, will repay you openly†.
5 “When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites! For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they will be seen by people. Most certainly, I tell you, they have received their reward! 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room. And when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you openly†. 7 And when you are praying, don’t repeat the same words again and again, as the people of other nations do; for they think that they will be heard because they talk a lot. 8 So don’t be like them, because your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
9 So you, pray like this:
‘Our Father who is in heaven:
Your name, be respected as holy!
10 Your Kingdom, come!
Your will, happen!
As in heaven, may these things also be on earth.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.
13 Don’t bring us into a trial,
but rescue us from the evil one.
Because the Kingdom, the power, and the recognition are Yours forever. Amen.†’
14 “Because if you forgive men their misdeeds, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive men their misdeeds, neither will your Father forgive your misdeeds.
16 “And when you fast, don’t be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they make their faces look bad, that they may appear to people to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward! 17 But you, when you fast, rub oil on your head and wash your face; 18 so that you don’t appear to people to be fasting, but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you†.
19 “Don’t lay up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy, and where thieves don’t break in and steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sincere, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is selfish, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t serve both God and money. 25 Therefore I tell you, don’t worry about your life, what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the sky, that they don’t plant and don’t harvest and don't gather into barns. And your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more value than they?
27 “Which of you, by worrying, can add one forearm to his height? 28 Why are you worried about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They don’t work and they don’t spin thread, 29 but I tell you that even Solomon in all his splendor was not dressed like one of these. 30 But if God dresses the grass of the field in this way, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, won’t He dress you much more, people of little faith?
31 “So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘What will we wear?’ 32 For the people of other nations seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first God’s Kingdom, and His righteousness; and all these things will be given to you. 34 So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
