Matthew 4

1 Then Joshua was led up by the spirit into the backcountry to be tested by the slanderer. 2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was hungry afterward. 3 The examiner came and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

4 But He answered, “It is written, ‘Man doesn’t live by bread only, but by every word that comes from God’s mouth’!”

5 Then the slanderer took Him into the holy city and set Him on the highest part of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, jump off, because it is written,

He will command His angels concerning you.

and,

They will carry you in their hands,so you won’t hit your foot on a stone.’”

7 Joshua said to him, “Again, it is written, ‘Don’t test the Master your God’!”

8 Again, the slanderer took Him to an extremely high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “I will give you all of these things, if You will bow down and worship me!”

10 Then Joshua said to him, “Go away behind Me, Enemy! Because it is written, ‘Worship the Master your God, and serve Him only’!”

11 Then the slanderer left him. And look, angels came and served him. 12 Now when Joshua heard that Johanan had been arrested, He departed to Galilee. 13 And leaving Natzrat, He came and lived in Kfar Naḥum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 so what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled, saying,

15The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,Galilee of the nations. 16 The people living in darkness saw a great light. Those living in the region and shadow of death,a light has shined on them.

17 From that time Joshua began to preach and to say, “Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven has come near.”

18 And walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers: Shimon (who is called Stone), and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the lake because they were fishermen. 19 And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers for men.”

20 They immediately left the nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, Jacob the son of Zavdai, and Johanan his brother, in the boat with Zavdai their father, mending their nets. And He called them. 22 So they immediately left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

23 And Joshua went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people. 24 So the report about Him went out into all Syria. And they brought to Him all who were sick, afflicted with various diseases and torments, possessed with demons, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them. 25 And large crowds from Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan followed Him.
