1 A scroll of the family history of Joshua Anointed, son of David, son of Abraham. 2 Abraham had Isaac.
Then Isaac had Jacob. Then Jacob had Judah and his brothers. 3 Then Judah had Peretz and Zeraḥ by Tamar.
Then Peretz had Ḥetzron. Then Ḥetzron had Ram. 4 Then Ram had Amminadab.
Then Amminadab had Nahshon. Then Nahshon had Salmon. 5 Then Salmon had Boaz by Rahab.
Then Boaz had Obed by Ruth. Then Obed had Jesse. 6 Then Jesse had David the king.
Then David the king† had Solomon by the wife of Uriah. 7 Then Solomon had Rehoboam.
Then Rehoboam had Abijah. Then Abijah had Asa†. 8 Then Asa had Jehoshaphat.
Then Jehoshaphat had Joram. Then Joram had Uzziah. 9 Then Uzziah had Jotham.
Then Jotham had Ahaz. Then Ahaz had Hezekiah. 10 Then Hezekiah had Manasseh.
Then Manasseh had Amon. Then Amon had Josiah. 11 Then Josiah had Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the Babylonian exile.
12 Then after the Babylonian exile, Jechoniah had Shealtiel.
Then Shealtiel had Zerubbabel. 13 Then Zerubbabel had Abiud.
Then Abiud had Eliakim. Then Eliakim had Azor. 14 Then Azor had Zadok.
Then Zadok had Achim. Then Achim had Eliud. 15 Then Eliud had Eleazar.
Then Eleazar had Matthan. Then Matthan had Jacob. 16 Then Jacob had Joseph, the husband of Miriam, by whom Joshua was born, who is called Anointed.
17 So all the generations are: from Abraham to David, fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; and from the Babylonian exile to the Anointed, fourteen generations.
18 Now the birth of Joshua Anointed was like this: For His mother, Miriam, was betrothed to Joseph. Before they came together, she was found to be pregnant from the holy spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being righteous and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to divorce her secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, look! A messenger of the Master appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David! Don’t be afraid to take Miriam as your wife, because the baby in her was conceived from the holy spirit. 21 And she will give birth to a son, and you are to call His name Joshua (which means Yehovah Rescues), because He will rescue His people from their crimes.”
22 Now all this has happened, so that the thing spoken by the Master through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying,
23 “Look! The virgin will become pregnant,
and will give birth to a Son.
And they will call His name Immanuel,”
which is translated, “God with us.”
24 Then Joseph, being woken up† from sleep, did as the messenger of the Master told him to do, and took her to be his wife, 25 but he didn’t know her until she gave birth to her firstborn† Son. And he called His name Joshua.
