Exodus 2

1 Now a man of the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi as his wife. 2 And the woman became pregnant, and gave birth to a son. And she saw that he was good, and she hid him three months. 3 And she wasn’t able to continue hiding him, so she got a papyrus reed basket for him, and coated it with tar and with pitch. And she put the child in it, and put it among the reeds beside the bank of the Nile River. 4 And his sister stood at a distance, to find out what would be done to him. 5 Then Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe at the Nile River. And her young ladies walked along beside the Nile River. And she saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her slave to get it. 6 And she opened it, and saw the child, and look, the baby cried! And she felt sorry for him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”

7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”

8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Yes, go.”

And the young lady went and called the child’s mother. 9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.”

So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she named him Moses, and said, “Because I pulled him out of the water.”

11 Now it was in those days, when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his brothers, and looked at their burdens. And he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brothers. 12 And he looked this way and that way, and he saw that there was no one. So he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

13 And he went out the second day, and look, two men of the Hebrews were fighting with each other. And he said to him who did the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow man?”

14 Then he said, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you plan to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?”

And Moses was afraid and said, “Surely this thing is known!” 15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he tried to kill Moses. But Moses ran away from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian. And he sat down by a well.

16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. And they came and fetched water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock. 17 Then the shepherds came and chased them away. But Moses stood up and helped them and gave water to their flock. 18 And when they came back to their father Re’uel, he said, “How have you come back so early today?”

19 And they said, “An Egyptian rescued us from of the hand of the shepherds, and he also fetched water for us and gave water to the flock.”

20 So he said to his daughters, “Where is he? Why have you left the man? Call him to eat bread.”

21 And Moses was happy to stay with the man. And he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses. 22 And she gave birth to a son, and he named him Gershom (which means Foreigner There), because he said, “I have lived as a foreigner in an unfamiliar land.”

23 Now it was, during those many days, that the king of Egypt died. And the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out, and their cry for help came up to God because of the bondage. 24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his contract with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25 And God saw the children of Israel, and God was concerned about them.
