Is Africa Mentioned in Bible Prophecy?

About 30% of the Bible is prophecy. Is Africa mentioned in prophecy?

World Map

The Bible has many prophecies about what will happen to specific countries during the last days.

How can you know if your country is mentioned in Bible prophecy?

Read on to find out.

The Names of Most Countries Have Changed

The the Bible was written several thousand years ago. Back then, the names of many countries were different. To find out if your country is mentioned in Bible prophecy, you need to find the name for your ethnic group in the Bible.

The Bible says that everyone alive today is a descendant of Noah and his three sons.

Near the beginning of the Bible, in Genesis 10, we find a list of Noah’s descendants. This chapter mentions about 70 ethnic groups that existed about 4200 years ago.

The Bible mentions these same ethnic groups in prophecies about the end times. If you can link these ancient tribal names to specific countries and ethnic groups that exist today, then you can understand which countries the Bible mentions in end-time prophecies.

Africa in the Bible

Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Ham had four sons:

  • Cush
  • Mitzraim
  • Put
  • Canaan

You may want to open your Bible to Genesis 10 to see the list of names for yourself.

Mitzraim is the Bible’s name for Egypt, and in most Bibles it is usually translated “Egypt.”

Put is the name for several tribes of North Africa. Some Bibles translate this name as “Lybia,” but it includes much of North Africa.

Canaan was an ethnic group that settled in the area that is now Israel, Palestine, and Lebanon. Later the ancient Israelites took over part of this land, but they didn’t conquer all of the Canaanites.

The ancient Phoenicians were Canaanites that established colonies on the coasts of North Africa, Turkey, and Spain. The Phoenician colony at Carthage (located in modern Tunisia) fought several wars against the Roman Empire. Many Canaanites remain in the coastal areas around the Mediterranean Sea, including North Africa, Palestine, and Lebanon.

Cush is the Bible’s name for most of the dark-skinned tribes of Africa. In most Bible translations, the name Cush is usually translated “Ethiopia,” but Cush includes many other African tribes in addition to the tribes in Ethiopia.

(Ethiopia is a Greek word for all dark-skinned people, regardless of where they live. For example, the Greeks called dark-skinned people of India “Asian Ethiopians.” Ethiopia means “burnt face” in Greek, which sounds pretty rude to us today—but that is how the ancient Greeks talked.)

The Bible confirms that the name Cush refers to tribes with dark skin. For example, Jeremiah 13:23 says,

“Can the Ethiopian [Cushite] change his skin?”

The Bible locates Cush beyond Egypt (2 Chronicles 12:3) and some of the Cushites near Arabia (2 Chronicles 21:16).

The Bible mentions that the first world ruler was a Cushite (Genesis 10:8-12), and that the prophet Moses was married to a Cushite woman (Numbers 12:1).

You should also know that the curse mentioned in Genesis 9:25, was on Canaan. Noah did not curse Ham or any of Ham’s other children. Noah only cursed Canaan because Canaan was the one who violated him.

Africa in End-Time Prophecy

Africa is mentioned many times in end-time prophecy. Some of these prophecies have good news, and some have bad news.

For example, the Bible mentions a coming war between the King of the North and the King of the South. In this war, the King of the North will invade Africa and conquer Egypt and gain control of several other countries in Africa and the Middle East.

This war is described in Daniel 11:40-43:

“At the time of the end the king of the south will contend with him [the king of the north]; and the king of the north will come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, with horsemen, and with many ships. He will enter into the countries, and will overflow and pass through. He will enter also into the glorious land [modern Israel], and many countries will be overthrown; but these will be delivered out of his hand: Edom, Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon [modern Jordan]. He will also stretch out his hand on the countries. The land of Egypt won’t escape. But he will have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt. The Libyans [the Luvim, a tribe in North Africa] and the Ethiopians [Cushites, the dark-skinned tribes of Africa] will be at his steps.

When will this happen? And where will the King of the North come from?

I explain the details of this prophecy (and many others) in the Prophecy Challenge, which you can join below. In the challenge I will show you, straight from the Bible, the sequence of events that will happen between now and the return of Christ.
