Yom Kippur in Bible Prophecy

What is Yom Kippur? What is the prophetic significance of this day?

Bible

The Day of Atonement, also know by its Hebrew name “Yom Kippur” is a day full of prophectic meaning.

The Hebrew Scriptures describe a special ceremony that was performed on this day involving two goats (Leviticus 16). The high priest was to take two goats, and cast lots for the goats. One goat was for the LORD, and was to be sacrificed as an offering for sin (verse 9). This goat represents Jesus Christ, who died for the sins of the world.

The other goat is called the “scapegoat” in English (verse 10). But this is not an accurate translation. In Hebrew, it says this goat is “for Azazel,” which scholars recognize as the name of a demon. This goat is taken away and released in the wilderness. What does this second goat represent?

We find the answer in Revelation 20:1-2:

Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years;

The second goat represents Satan, who will be locked up for 1,000 years.

That is great news, but that is just part of the meaning of the Day of Atonement. Right before Satan is locked up, there will be a great battle between Jesus Christ and the nations of this world (Revelation 19:11-21), often called the Battle of Armageddon. At that time, the Antichrist and His followers will be defeated. This future Day of Atonement will be the biggest turning point in history.
