Olaf Scholz: Germany Should Take Responsibility for Europe and the World

In an article titled “The EU Must Become a Geopolitical Actor,” published on July 17 by the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz suggested that Germany should take “responsibility for Europe and the world in these difficult times” and bring “together East and West, North and South in Europe, as a country in the middle of Europe.”
Scholtz commented that the Russian invasion of Ukraine was a turning point that Germany, Europe, and the world must respond to. “The new reality includes the 100 billion euros that we decided to set up as a special fund for the Bundeswehr [the German armed forces].” This is one way the EU has made steps toward becoming a geopolitical actor “in a world of competing great powers.”
